Brain’s defense mechanism

The brain tries to erase (or atleast suppress) painful memories so that they do not cause us harm in the long run. The memories actually do persist, but their links to the negative emotional cores of the brain (pain, sorrow, fear, anger) are progressively severed. This I think is the brain’s defense mechanism.
