Building Nautilus with jhbuild

March 25, 2009 at 10:31 am (Uncategorized)

Nautilus <http://live.gnome.org/nautilus> is the window manager for Gnome. There are 2 ways to build Nautilus from source. Never mind about the first way, the 2nd way is way better. There is a tool called jhbuild <http://live.gnome.org/Jhbuild> which automatically resolves module dependencies, downloads/checks out modules and then builds and installs them.

To learn how to build Nautilus follow <http://live.gnome.org/Jhbuild> line by line.

Here are some of the problem I faced and certain observations:

1) It downloads and build 62 modules. Downloads around 350 MB of data and on building creates 400 MB more in the directory you downloaded it in. On top of that 228 MB more worth of stuff is sent to /opt/gnome2.

2) It stalled whenever it was trying to wget something from ftp. So I set the ftp proxy for the shell:

export ftp_proxy=http://10.0.0.1:3128 (10.0.0.1:3128 are specific to my institute)

3) On reaching the 61st package (the second last package mind you) it started checking out a package named exempi from git. Our institute has proxy restrictions and git does not work. I was in a fix as to what to do. I then remembered a hack i tried long ago when I was hacking the linux kernel. The normal command which kept failing was:

git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/exempi

So I first added http proxy details to git like this:

git config –global http.proxy 10.0.0.1:3128

Then I checked whether anongit.freedesktop.org also supports http protocol by going to http://anongit.freedesktop.org

It said “This host is useful solely for fetching git repositories via http” and I said YaY to myself!

I then opened a new terminal and changed directory to checkout/gnome2 and executed this command:

git clone http://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/exempi.git

2 changes here. I changed the protocol to http:// and added a .git at the end. Once the checkout was done I resumed jhbuild process and Nautilus was built successfully.

Hope that helps.

 • I transferred all entries made till date from http://debayanin.googlepages.com/hackingtesseract to http://hacking-tesseract.blogspot.com/ because its better this way. Its easier to add entries.
 • 44 days to go for college life.
 • Tesseract-Indic now has 3 new active project members. 2 are working on Malayalam, and one is from Sarai playing around with the code.
 • Tomorrow is March 16. Tomorrow is Richard Stallman’s Birthday.
 • Shreyank has an interview coming up at Kolkata. All the best to him. If he gets through, it shall be red letter day for our institute for certain reasons.
 • I started going to the gymnasium here in our college, and am loving it. My body is aching here and there, but thats fine.
 • As soon as I publish results for this project and document all my work and experience properly for others to follow, I shall volunatarily back out from the Sarai fellowship. I now feel I should have given time to other projects that interested me more at certain points of time.
 • I feel like going home all of a sudden.

Updates

[1] We are doing the rounds of Durgapur police station visiting IG and ASP offices. A few days back a few of my 2nd year juniors seriously injured some of my 1st year juniors in a ragging incident. We are figting to get the culprits severe punishment. The administration is putting many hurdles, but we are making headway.

[2] Rohit Gupta from Kalyani Govt Engineering College is visiting me. Stayed in my room in the afternoon. Got a room emptied for him thanks to Arvind. He is a great guy and full of enthusiasm. He knows a lot of stuff for a 2nd year guy and has even built GRUB from source to triple boot Windows, Mac OSX and Linux on the same machine.

[3] Updated http://debayanin.googlepages.com/hackingtesseract

[4] 2 unfortunate deaths in the family.

[5] Going to Bijra tomorrow. Hallowed grounds for FOSS enthusiasts.
